Dynamic Design

with the five classical canons of rhetoric

The Quilter's Invention

I am in my quiltmaking studio.  An intriguing piece of fiery red fabric has caught my eye and is challenging me to use it as the central focus of my next quilt.  I begin to brainstorm about which patterns might best showcase this lively red hue, and I jot abbreviated notes on a scrap of paper beside my chair.  Eventually, after evaluating each idea, I decide to stitch the fabric into an Irish chain quilt.  The manner in which I use this red fabric, and its supporting fabrics, in the Irish chain pattern becomes my invention.*
