Introduction to the Five Canons of Classical Rhetoric: Invention, Arrangement, Style, Memory, Delivery
Invention is the entirety of your creation. Arrangement is the organization, or structure, of your creation. Style is the manner of your audience appeal--and includes word choices, diction, and sentence structure for writers . . . pattern choices and colour combinations for quilters. Memory refers to the technique of using your memory to create--and of creating to evoke certain types of memories in your audience. Delivery is the product of your creation: an essay, a book, a movie, a magazine article, a lecture . . . a quilted wallhanging, a bed quilt, a quilted garment. ~~~~~~~ Utilizing both the quiltmaking and the writing segments of this website will enable your mind to synthesize the rhetorical strategies that I provide. The two segments are complementary and can assist writers and quiltmakers in becoming skilled artists of design. Mentally, both a quilt and a text can be effectively designed by employing the classical rhetorical tools. Of additional interest is the fact that the physical skills of both handwriting and handquilting utilize a combination of the thumb and middle finger to push either the pen or the needle. Just as the quilting stitches securing the three layers of a quilt add depth to the design of the quilt, a flat text may become dimensional through utilizing the canonic tools of composing. ~~~~~~~ *Quoted from my article "Teaching the Tools of the Five Classical Canons of Rhetoric to Composition Students through the Quiltmaking Design Process"--copyrighted 2006. ~~~~~~~ Next, visit my Studio! ~~~~~~~ |
